Silver Sounds

Reinterpreting Queen's University's Silver Collection

Loving Cups with Rosewood Handles

These silver Loving Cups are typical of 1970s design with plain robust bodies and proportionately large rosewood handles. The experimental juxtaposition of different media was a fashionable statement at the time. The covers bear the crest of the University.

The term 'loving cup' is derived from the early use of these cups to share a celebratory drink and the later Irish tradition of giving a two handled cup as a wedding present.
