Reinterpreting Queen's University's Silver Collection

Mulholland Cup for Rowing and Athletics

The Mulholland Cup for Rowing and Athletics, made in London in 1866, is a sporting trophy with elaborate chasing, bearing classic silver designs including Acanthus scrolled handles and garlanded cherubs. The cup is densely engraved with the names of the winners dating back to the 1860s. The tradition of the giving of a cup as a prize began when a two handled cup was passed round at the winning post in celebration of a win in horse racing.
