Reinterpreting Queen's University's Silver Collection

Silver Mace and Stand

Known as the City Mace, this Silver Mace and Stand was made in Dublin in 1959 by the celebrated County Down silversmith James Warwick, a former Head of the Belfast College of Art and a designer for Mappin and Webb before the Second World War. It was presented to Queen's in 1958 by the Belfast Corporation to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the granting of the University's Charter. It is a particularly elegant object with the cylindrical tapering shaft supporting a pear shaped fluted head decorated with gilt stars and the university shield. It is used at graduation ceremonies at which the Lord Mayor of Belfast is in attendance.
