Reinterpreting Queen's University's Silver Collection

Cara Murphy, Silversmith

In addition to working as an Associate Lecturer in Silversmithing and Jewellery at the University of Ulster at Belfast, Cara runs her own contemporary silversmithing practice. Her silver tableware is represented in many national and international public and private collections including the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Ulster Museum, Belfast; the Shipley Art Gallery, Newcastle Upon Tyne; Aberdeen Art Gallery; the Arts Council an Chomhairle Ealaoin; the Irish Embassy Collection and the Royal College of Art, London.

Cara works mainly to commission and exhibits her silverware internationally. Her work has been showcased in numerous high profile applied art and silversmithing exhibitions. Trained at Glasgow School of Art and the Royal College of Art Cara has won many distinguished awards for her work throughout her career.

Cara's recent work is of a larger, more sculptural nature. She states: "I like the idea that the pieces are growing from the table. I'm interested in the landscape of tableware: questioning contexts, boundaries and function in silverware."

Using traditional silversmithing techniques Cara's work addresses the concept of a silver landscape in the context of the table that challenges the boundaries of functional silver tableware.
