During the process of creating Seed Heads Amanda Sefton, Educational Media Producer at Queen's University, Belfast, filmed Cara at work in her workshop in Hillsborough to cast some light on both the working process of a silversmith and the development of the Silver Sounds commission. The following two films give an insight into how Cara created Seed Heads and how the commissioning process works.
Cara Murphy, Silversmith
Having trained for six years to become a silversmith, Cara discusses sharing a workshop with her father, Michael McCrory. She gives an insight into the philosophies behind her work and talks about how she sees Seed Heads forming an integral part of the Queen's University, Belfast Silver Collection.
The Silversmithing Process
This video shows the making process. Watch how Cara manipulates the silver sheet from a flat disc into a three dimensional form using many different pressing and hammering techniques. Cara shows how she draws with materials to create her sculptural designs and talks about commissioning Jeremy Suffern to create the wooden base for Seed Heads.
