ADAPT NI was established as a pilot scheme in Northern Ireland on behalf of the ADAPT Fund in Great Britain in 1991.
ADAPT NI aims to promote improved access to arts, community, heritage and leisure venues in Northern Ireland through advice, training and support and to develop a programme of activities and events which will involve disabled and non-disabled people at all levels in a way which is relevant to the objectives of the organisation.
ADAPT NI’s remit covers arts and community centres, theatres, concert halls, libraries, museums and public galleries, community centres and other buildings where arts and social activities take place.
Statistics show that 20.5% of the population in NI is affected by a disability. ADAPT NI is working to ensure that a more accessible environment is created to enable all people to interact on equal terms.
ADAPT NI aims to improve accessibility in the future, not just in terms of the built environment but in the widest sense of access through projects, which encourage awareness, participation, integration and employment. The ADAPT Activities Committee is a panel of disabled and non-disabled volunteers with a genuine interest in access and disability issues. Committee members are involved at all levels in ADAPT NI projects and activities.
