Like many genres of contemporary art, sound art is interdisciplinary, engaging in acoustics and psychoacoustics, electronics, audio technologies and found or environmental sound. It is often associated with installation, sculpture and lens-based work and is by no means confined to a gallery environment.
Working through the Sonic Arts Research Centre, a call for submissions was circulated to sound artists all over the world, together with images of the selected silver. Artists were asked how they might respond to a particular piece, especially to the emotions attached to its donation or usage. The collaborative nature of the immersive experience was stressed with each sound artist being aware that the visitor would be able to trigger the simultaneous playing of all the soundscapes.
